Caring for Little Smiles
Pediatric Dentistry
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that your child should see a dentist when their first tooth comes out, or when they turn one year old. This may seem early, but regular dental visits from a young age will help your child become familiar with the process and allow your dentist to track their oral development throughout the years. If you’re looking for a pediatric dentist in Altadena, the team at Twenty28 Dentistry is here to help. We offer full-service dentistry for children of all ages. Stop Cavities
Silver-Diamine Fluoride
Silver-diamine fluoride (SDF) is a special liquid that halts the progression of cavities when applied. It’s a good alternative to fillings for baby teeth, as it can prevent cavities from getting worse until the tooth falls out naturally. However, it is only recommended for baby teeth, since the treatment will permanently discolor the tooth.
Restore Damaged Teeth
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are the best way to restore baby teeth that have been damaged by extensive decay or dental trauma. They are often recommended instead of fillings for children, particularly for treating the rear teeth (molars & premolars). A crown will keep your child’s tooth healthy until it falls out naturally, as part of the natural growth of your mouth.
Ensure Proper Oral Development
Space Maintainers
If your child loses a baby tooth early, a space maintainer is necessary to keep their mouth healthy. Space maintainers are intended to prevent the surrounding teeth from shifting toward your child’s now-empty tooth socket. This ensures that their permanent adult teeth will grow into their mouths properly, without complications.
Restore Infected Teeth
Pulpotomies
Sometimes called a “baby root canal,” pulpotomies are meant to treat infected teeth. The diseased pulp will be removed from the interior of your child’s tooth and a special dressing will be applied to help maintain the health of the remaining pulp, preserving the baby tooth until it falls out naturally.
Create a Healthy Routine
Proper at-Home Care
Coming to Twenty28 Dentistry for routine care is just one part of a strong oral hygiene routine. Proper at-home care is the backbone of pediatric dentistry. It is important to brush your child’s teeth at least twice per day for two minutes using a fluoridated toothpaste and floss their teeth once per day. Your child can usually start brushing their own teeth around the age of 6, or whenever they can tie and untie their own shoes. However, they usually won’t be able to floss on their own until about the age of 10.
